Yesterday I was asked by a reader to help with her problem of wide set bottom-heavy breasts. I have the exact same problem and it can lead me to need to go up a cup size but have to endure ‘extra room’ at the top of the cups. Now I have a policy where if a bra doesn’t fit perfectly, I won’t buy it, but I know many women can have such a hard time finding bras that fit so difficult that it can feel frustrating and really quite demoralising. I have a question relating to possible bra recommendations. I have extremely wide set, bottom-heavy breasts. There is barely any breast tissue at the top of my breasts. I am unable to wear bras that are soft cup because the bottom half fits and the top half doesn’t. Also, to make matters more complicated I’m in between a 30e and 30f.
I recently had a bra fitter tell me that my breasts are weird. (This was from one of the only places in town that sells a 30 back and are supposed specialists) She kept trying to tell me that the 30D’s she was trying to sell me fit properly, and then implied that it was all in my head that I was uncomfortable in them. I’ve pretty much given up on finding a place in my city that isn’t filled with disgruntled as. HELP! This reminds me of the time before I was measured in Bravissimo the first time a few years back. I would go in to La Senza for a fitting to be told I am a 32E or DD and find that nothing seemed to fit me right. I would dismiss balconette styles (now my favourite style of bra!) as they would always gape and offer zero support. I would wear plunges that gave me excess ‘side boob’ but I would put up with it because… well the fitter said it fitted, so she has to be right, right?
No. She was absolutely not right. Poor fitting is the answer to your problem. Absolutely never settle for a second-rate fitting, as I know women can develop serious problems due to this. It can lead to physical pain and even depression, I know it is absolutely no laughing matter and is not to be taken lightly. I know whenever I fit someone I will not stop until they are smiling ear-to-ear and are delighted with their new bras. I’m not getting paid or benefiting from doing it in any way other than offering a service which simply isn’t available on the average high street, and I am passionate about seeing women feel happier about themselves, because I know how much it can genuinely change your life. Correct fitting bras make you feel sexy, make your clothes look infinitely better and most importantly, can avoid back pains, shoulder pains and even cancer.
I can not fathom why someone would tell you your boobs are ‘weird’, that is insane. I used to think my bra-fitting problems were down to my ‘odd’ shape or how it was somehow my fault. It isn’t. Nowadays I find a whole wealth of bras which fit me brilliantly – although I rarely find Freya bras a problem (they tend to have narrower wires) lots of people claim brands like Panache are more suitable for wide-set breasts. I also find Curvy Kate are quite wide compared to Freya. I also find balconette styles suit my wide-set breasts much much better than plunges nine times out of ten. Just play around and experiment with styles and brands till you find something just right you may want to try mail order from sites like Brastop, who do lots of styles at outlet prices. Please PLEASE find the time to visit a Bravissimo if you are from the UK, if there isn’t one nearby why not organise a city break? You could always have a try of my bust size calculator which may give you a bit of an indicator of fitting yourself at home, which by the sounds of it may be a better option than what is available to you at the moment.
