Triumph Magic Wire: Bra Review

Triumph Magic Wire: Bra Review

You may remember my blog post from a few weeks ago when I was invited along to Triumph’s press launch of their new innovative non-wired bra: Magic Wire.

Well it’s been a little while now and I’ve been wearing this baby in order to test it out for you guys, and I feel like I’m finally ready to give my two cents. I have given myself a little longer than usual to form my opinion on a bra, as it’s something a little different than anything I’ve ever worn before. I have to admit, as a wired bra enthusiast, I was a little skeptical how effectively a bra with no wire could support me just as well as one of the traditional wired bras I already own.

Non-Wired Bra

First of all, I’ll start with how the bra looks. I’ll put it into context for you. In the non-wired bra world, you’ll see a wealth of frumpy, unattractive bras which you could never ever imagine someone in their twenties would ever even consider being seen dead in, so the fact that Triumph has come up with something in this category that I can quite happily put on is quite a feat in itself.

The set I tried was ‘Contouring Sensation’ in black, which had lovely nude details in the lace underlining, straps and a cute little bow at the front. The bra has a modern, clean look to it, and it perfect for every day.

The styling and marketing of the product, not usually a great concern to me but, I think, worth mentioning in this case as it’s quite unique. Triumph seems to be doing everything in their power to shake off the associations of wireless bras of the past, with simple yet stunning imagery which looks like it would sit perfectly at home in a Victoria’s Secret or sexy lingerie boutique shop window; not something you could very easily say about their best-selling Doreen.

Triumph Magic Wire

The shape of the bra itself is a little unusual; it reminds me a little like the Wonderbra Ultimate Strapless but with straps. The shape isn’t really comparable to the traditional wire bras that I’m used to, as the band does not visibly separate from the cups resulting in the front section seems more like one large section rather than two defined cups. The center apex does not sit flush against my skin like you would expect from a traditional wired bra. At first, this was extremely odd to me, like wearing two left-footed shoes, but the more I wore the bra the more I got the feeling that this was due to the bra being a different beast rather than it being inherently ‘wrong’. After a while, it becomes a much less alien feeling and I soon started to get used to the feeling of not having that compression at the center of my ribcage which I know causes discomfort to so many women. I had no fears that my boobs were going to go wandering out of the cups or going anywhere they weren’t supposed to be!

There’s quite a lot of bra going on in the front cup section, but it seems to me that the increased surface area of the cups is what’s necessary to make this bra give its wired sisters a run for their money in the support department. This did take a bit of getting used to, but I imagine if you’re more used to wearing molded cups this won’t be such a shock to the system.

I was fitted into was the largest cup size available in this bra, an F, and I can see why the bra isn’t available in anything larger. The wires sit a touch higher in the Magic Wire than you would expect from a ‘regular’ bra, and the cups started to distort just a little at the base of the cup in my size. It’s nothing which shows under clothing or which would lead me to say this bra doesn’t fit well, but enough to make me think that it’s unlikely that Triumph would extend the cup size range in this style, unfortunately.

The overall cup shape is surprisingly good. For a long time I was still hesitant to believe that a bra with these flimsy little silicone wires could possibly give a good shape, but thanks to the molded cups and mesh stabilizer, the shape is very round and uplifted.

For those of you who read regularly and are aware of my issues with molded bras, the full cup and more full-on-bottom shape of the Magic Wire meant I didn’t really encounter the same issues that I’m used to. Instead, I just felt comfortably held in place. Ideal!

Since this style isn’t available in my usual 30FF, I have a 32 band so the fit as firm as I’m used to, and I feel like a 30FF would have been better if I had wanted this bra to replace my ‘regular’ bras. When wearing this set for a full day or an active day, I would wear it on the tightest hook, just so I knew I was properly strapped in, and it was fine. For wearing casually around the house, though, the 32F was fine, and since this turned out to be what I used this bra for most of the time, I didn’t have too many fit complaints. This bra has become my go-to for when I’m working, lounging around the house or having a Thursday night baking and Netflix session.

Bra Support

Support-wise the bra is gentle, and it’s not going to be up to jogging or more physical activities. It’s not the bra I would pick to wear for crazy Christmas shopping trips or for a day’s sight-seeing around town. It’s more of a lounge/easy to wear basic, for days when you’re taking things easy and having a more relaxed day when you just want complete comfort. That said, it’s an ideal work bra if you have an office job where you’re sat at a desk all day and dread the feeling of your wires tormenting you throughout the day!

I really love the leopard print jacquard version of the Magic Wire, and I have my eye on the festive red version. Can you think of a more perfect Christmas day bra (yes I have mentioned Christmas twice in this post but it’s October now so it’s officially sort of ok – right?).
