Contrary Kiwi Follow Fridays Blogger Interview

Contrary Kiwi’s Emma is a real inspiration to me as her blog so completely her own, and she injects so much of her lifestyle and personality into it (something I’m really keen to work on for Invest In Your Chest!).
She’s got some great ‘outfit of the days’ which show off her wicked individual style, and sh shares her bra fitting woes, tips and tricks with with her funny, sensitive, raw and honest posts. I particularly love (and identify with!) her post on the philosophy of using Photoshop.

Hi Emma! Please could you give us a little introduction?
Hi, I’m Contrary Kiwi, or Emma. My blog’s name comes from my nationality (New Zealander, or Kiwi) and my nature – for as long as I’ve been alive, I’ve done things just because other people weren’t and vice versa. I’m 21 and currently have four jobs, two of them being at a high school working with kids and being my main focus. I’m a little bit rebellious and have always worried about what others think of me.
When did you start your blog and why?
I started my blog on Tumblr after I started reading a few fashion blogs and liking what I saw. I’ve always liked being in photos and so I started off just taking outfit photos (which I still mostly do). I started the bra aspect after I found out about the bra matrix from Venusian*Glow and discovered I wasn’t a 12D but in fact an 8F (later refitted myself to 8FF, then 8G). There is a huge dearth of correct bra information in New Zealand, which I wanted to change.
Which other lingerie blogs do you read the most?
Braless in Brasil, Boosaurus, Hourglassy and Curvy Wordy. I do read a number of others (including IIYC, of course!) and I’ve found the bloggers behind the blogs to be amazing people.
Where do you recommend people go get fitted?
Mostly to me. I trust only two bra stores in Christchurch (my city) and most people haven’t heard of them. The Fitting Room and Savoir are two boutiques in Christchurch that carry bras from the UK mostly.
Which brand do you think suits your shape and style best?
I don’t know, sadly. I don’t get much chance to actually try on most of the bras I like, as my choices in Christchurch are basically limited to Freya. The narrow wires of Freya work for me, but they are too pointy. I would love to try Ewa Michalak, but maybe one day in the future.

What is your ‘desert island’ lingerie set?
If I was actually stuck on a desert island, my Panache Sports Bra. If we’re talking the bra I want to wear the most, the Freya Deco. I own one, but in the wrong size. It pains me just thinking about it.

What, in your opinion, are the biggest upcoming trends in the lingerie world this Spring/Summer?
I have no idea. Lingerie trends and lingerie in general mean nothing to me. I hope high-waisted underwear is in, because I love it.
Are you a plunge or a balconette girl?
Balconette. Haven’t really worn enough plunges to give me a good idea of them, but wearing a bra that’s secure when you bend over is always a plus.
What is your lingerie guilty pleasure?
Um, I realise this probably isn’t at all the answer I’m meant to give, but I love describing my bras to people. Cute or sexy bras that are actually comfortable are considered a myth in NZ (and rightly so) so when I tell them that one of my most comfortable bras looks like I bought it for my wedding night, people’s eyes go huge. It’s great.
What do you think is missing from the current lingerie market?
Uh, how about the Freya Deco being available in bigger cups? And NZ could do with actually having access to beautiful bras in a real variety of sizes.

Thanks for sharing your blog and thoughts with us, Emma!
